Alex de Fluvià was born in Barcelona in 1966. He studied Art History at the University of Barcelona and photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His body of work is a hybrid of cultural observations accumulated over extensive travels, in contrast with his deep Mediterranean roots. In his paintings, randomness, superimposition and the repetition of signs are intertwined to produce work with universal attributes.
De Fluvià has lived in New York, Cairo, Tokyo, and Dubai. After 6 years in his studio in Williamsburg, he relocated to Egypt, where he was fascinated by the Arabesque and the culture of modern day Cairo. His drawings and paintings during this period exude the essence of the mashrabia, inviting the viewer to look through the trellis of paint and discover hidden messages in the work.
De Fluvià's continuous investigation of gesture, ignited his journey to Japan in 2006, where he learned Shodo calligraphy in Tokyo. His abstractions incorporated graffiti-like motifs, Japanese patterns and his iconic red stroke. Later in Dubai, De Fluvià evolved his visual vernacular by creating works stripping the Arabic language of its connotative qualities and abstracting the beauty of its letter forms.
Since 2011, his artistic production explores duality and makes reference to social and political resistance. His recent works depict mixed messages of hope while alluding to life's uncertainty and inequality. By juxtaposing black and white photography in his paintings, he produces rich surfaces with collage, markings, graffiti and fluorescent colors creating tensions to transmit a conceptual basis of contradiction.
De Fluvià has had exhibitions in the US, London, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Egypt, Bahrein and the United Arab Emirates. He regularly shows his art work at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai.
